Music Video Evaluation

For this unit we had to create a music video in a period of 6 weeks. I started by searching the purpose of a music video. First I went to look at different styles of music video for example abstract, performance, narrative etc... and for my video I wanted to go with a narrative kind of video. After choosing the styles of my video I had to put down some initial ideas for what I wanted my music video to look like, first I picked the song I wanted to base my video on for example

hip-pop/rap, rock, jazz, blues and etc.… The song I had chosen was ‘Denim’ by Frank Ocean. The reason I picked this song is because it have a story line to it because I wanted to have a good narrative that would describe something from my own point of view. The song unfortunately didn’t have a video which was hard for me to have a point of view of the artist and what he wanted to express in his video with the song. Below are some music video that I look at and liked because of their narrative prospect of what the artist is saying from his lyrics and it reflect of what the video is showing.

But when we were put into groups we had to take only one proposal into production. My group members really liked my video but the only thing we were struggling with was the location we needed for my video proposal. so we picked another member video idea which a song called ‘Hii Power’ by Kendrick Lamar the song basically mean the simplest form of representing ourselves and just being above all the crazy stuff happening around the world. No matter what the world is going through, you’re always going to keep your dignity and carry yourself with this manner that it doesn’t phase you. Whatever you think negative is in your life. Overcoming that and still having that self-respect and also how the black community is being misguided and need to stand up and take responsibility. As the artist said “Hiiipower: the three i’s represent heart, honor and respect”. As a group we had to look at different music video for us to have a better idea how to portrait the song we had chosen for example we looked at ‘Star’ by The Roots and that was our main influence on our video because of the fast pace cuts from different face, location and people it really grabbed what I was looking for, that is not just featuring one side of the community but different communities from all over and provided a good foundation for our video.

As we start the video we hear Martin Luther King famous I have a dream speech in the background and then we see a unknown character in the opening scene with this mystery character in a balaclava who seems to be doing nothing is in fact listening to martin Luther King but do not know that until the end of the video and he is in fact learning from what he is hearing and he responses back in a rap about how he feels, from his point of view of life not just in what he says but what he sees by using plenty of location shots to show that it ain’t just one location he is talking about but all over these things he sees occur and everything going fast and people not caring about anything. As we continue we see trains moving in fast pace but then slowed down we used this to represent life in how fast they move to our destination then it goes on again like the song ‘Life Goes On’ by Tupac. Using some ideas I picked up from researching other music videos the idea of filming in different location was very useful in making the video not just only for fantastic location shots of the city but also making the viewer’s feel closer to home and showing that the struggle and what the mysterious character sees is not just in one place but all over.

I mostly enjoyed the practical work because it was a fun experience with all the different location we went to record and also working with new equipment and different software to edit the video. I've also enjoyed working with my group with new ideas and making sure that we push ourselves so to do it and not get to laid back and fall behind in our production. The other thing I really enjoyed was being the director it was that was new to me and I think I done a decent job also everyone in my group said they really enjoyed having me the director.

Weakness would be meeting the deadline for the writing and pre-production work more earlier and at a better timing. This is because it would of gave me more time for me to organize and schedule better and earlier timing for me to get the production filming and the evaluation to the best standards as possible I could and achieve a high grade when handing the whole project in.
When showing our video to other students in and out of college, I noticed that they really enjoyed the cuts and the effects that I have used in the video. However some student didn’t like the fact the character wearing the mask. Overall I believe the music video was a success, from the shots that was taken being the highlight of it I believe being our strongest point also but the way me and my recording partner got on so well in the video

Green Screen Effect. (Choma key)

Chroma key is a technique for blending two images, in which a colour or a small colour range from one image is removed or made transparent, revealing another image behind it. This technique is also referred to as colour keying, colour-separation overlay, greenscreen, and bluescreen. It is commonly used for weather forecast broadcasts, wherein the presenter appears to be standing in front of a large map, but in the studio it is actually a large blue or green background.

The principal subject is filmed or photographed against a background consisting of a single colour or a relatively narrow range of colours, usually blue or green because these colours are considered to be the furthest away from skin tone. The portions of the video which match the preselected colour are replaced by the alternate background video. This process is commonly known as "keying", "keying out" or simply a "key".

1. Import both your green screen footage (the video containing a green background, or some green elements that you want to replace) and the footage you want to use to replace the green into Final Cut Pro. (File>Import>Files)

2. Drag the video that you want to be the background (the video that will replace the green) onto Video Track 1.

FCP Green Screen Tutorial Step 2

3. Drag the the video with the green screen and place that on Video Track 2 directly above the previous clip.

FCP Green Screen Tutorial Step 3

4. Double click the footage on Track 2 so it displays in the viewer.

5.Go to Effects>Video Filters>Key>Chroma Keyer. This is the tool in Final Cut that will allow you to take out the green (aka, Chroma Key it)

FCP Green Screen Tutorial Step 4

6. Select the Chroma Key tab from the viewer window.

7. Choose the eye dropper tool from the tool palette to elect the green area in the canvas window.

8. Play around with the saturation and color box until you get a result that looks right to you.

9. Click back on the video tab in the viewer window to finalize.

KeyFrame Effect

We used the keyframing tool on Final Cut Pro to create these edits. We had to coordinate how it would move across the screens and rotation it would have in the edit. They use these is mostly short films and ads that we now see on the internet and on our TV's. These are only the few uses of Keyframing because there is much more to.

Clone Effect

The task was to create the cloning effect by following the four rules.
  • Steady Camera
  • Same Lighting
  • Eye line
  • To keep self in same position , so that other frame is not interfered.

First we had to come up with on idea to use in our cloning video such as an argument, conversation etc. Then we had to research about how to do it and what do watch out for such as the camera positioning must not move and the lighting must be the same because when you do the edit it will show. After we recorded and where satisfied with out footage we captured. We put them into Final Cut Pro then when I attempted to edit it the white balance was a little different so it looked obvious but I did what I could then uploaded it to my blog.

Annoying Orange Effect

First we had to watch a Tutorial about how to edit it to look like annoying orange. After that we had to record some footage of our faces and an abject that we will use to put the face on. In Final Cut Pro we cropped and resized our videos and then we lined the face to the picture. After that we masked our picture by using shapes then softened them then used some colour correction to make sure it blends.

Video Profile Dairy

On week one i made myself set up a blogging network for myself so later on i could then introduce my video profile. then i did my introduction to my video and started planning out my script and story boards.
i have completed this and met my target for my work to be fully completed, i made sure when i got home i did all the work in class saving it and taking it on my USB.
i have learnt that if i put more effort into my work then i can get a good grade i also learned that i can indeed edit videos and create them and they will get better as i keep doing them, my methods of this was asking for help then doing it my self and i enjoyed learning how to make the video its self.
in future i will try to take more things in rather than taking things in one by one so the whole process is much easier to tackle with.

On week two my target was too learn how to use the equipment camera and also disguising existing video profiles and adding more to my script and planning made sure i succeeded in that and completed that and met that target have learnt that i am good with the camera and i know how to opp-orate the camera with the learning activity's we had done with the camera have found out that i am more motivated by actually competing against my class mates in my learning because it makes everything more exciting in the work because you want to see how other videos will turn out.in the future i will again put my had up more if i don't understand things about the camera rather than just pressing the buttons on the camera.

On week three my target was to start filming properly and review my footage that i had shot,i felt like i had done that with every camera shot of my video and analysed what had needed to be changed and what i wanted to add so i re did some of my scenes to help my video be a success,i have learnt that in this type of task that my learning was good and that i can have a more of an understanding in what i am doing in my video analyzing have learnt that i am motivated by sitting down with my teacher and discussing what part of my film is good and what parts i may have to change, so i enjoyed the good and bad feedback, what frustrates me was sometimes i wasn't quit sure if my ideas would go out to plan and if i could carry them out. in future i will try to listen to more advice for me to make my video good and for me to also be an effective learner.

On week four my target was to edit my video more and complete work for my assessment achieved this by using he Mac and finally putting all my shots together also adding music and other special effects to make my video more interesting to my people’s have learnt that i have developed a skill as i went on for editing although i still feel it wasn't as good as others but then i got use to the software i was using. what motivates me as a learner is again competition with other peoples videos in the class and how they are editing there own video and how good mine has to be, this makes it challenging for me and i really enjoy it. what frustrates ne is sometimes when the editing is not going as well as you thought it was when you see other peoples editing. In future i will try to make my editing more cleaner and try and advance my skills in it more.

Video Profile Evaluation

I think my video profile is good. It meets the target of telling people about myself and what I'm about. Also there are lots of different video clips and different angle shots in the video so it's constantly different. I think I'm most proud of how it's all come together because I think the content is interesting and exciting. It shows lots of different editing skills. I think I could have filmed more so I could have make it longer and also with more shots to make it even more exciting, or maybe different location not just sit and talk, I could have walked around and talked or have been in an more interesting place.

Next time I would spend more time on making it look different from other video profiles because then mine would be unique to me and that is what the video profile is about and also to make it look and sound more professional I could use a better quality camera. Also I could use more equipment rather than just a tripod for example a microphone for better sound quality.

In the future I will try to manage my time more carefully. By breaking up my work and arranging it into small sets every week, I think I will be able to work more speedily without hassle. I would also like to be able to use the cameras more confidently as I feel that I was capable of shooting more professional styled clips. Although I prefer to learn things visually, I think taking notes during lessons and keeping them in an organised file would remind me of what I know and understand, and should I ever need to go back and restudy an area I would be able to. i will try to remain an effective learner, so i can push myself further and develop my knowledge as an individual and team partner.

For my first assignment I think it's pretty good considering we only had 5 weeks to finish the assignment. I also learned a lot of different skills using Final Cut Pro and I think will really help for next time we have to film project I hope I can learn from this experience and grow my knowledge to film and produce better quality videos. But at this moment in time I think my video is pretty good and shows people who don't know me what I'm all about.

Filming was really fun because I like being in front of the camera. Editing was also fun because
I added loads of techniques and stuff into the video, mainly audio clips, montages of pictures and with some special effects for video and picture transitions such as: Cross Dissolve, Fade ins & Outs and many more, it gave me so much more better looking footage and making the video look very dynamical. I got to see how it all turned out and putting it all together was great as I had put a lot of effort into it.

Music Styles

The genre of this video is hip-hop/rap. In the music video we see clips of the singer rapping and continuous short clips where she is flipping her hair, walking and releasing smoke, or painting a wall a black, in which towards the end she paints on top of to show another song release called "ignorant art."
The purpose of this video is to show that Iggy Azalea is a slightly seductive artist with an edgy attitude, we see this due to her clothing and fashion, (studded jackets and gold) as well as her make up which is simple but includes bright lipstick colours (a "hipster" trend.) We also see her holding a barking dog, which makes her look as though she should feared. Many female rappers highlight this sort of attitude in their music videos-in the case of male rappers, stereotypically they may surround themselves with money, cars and girls in their Music videos. We see a lot of medium shots and some over head shots, wide shots, and camera panning left/right with slowed down footage, another technique which is used in hip-hop/rap videos to give an overall more laidback yet stylish effect. Artificial lighting is used to make Iggy look more perfected and to show that the attention is on her.

KPOP

The genre of this song is Korean pop or KPOP if abbreviated. In this song, PSY is singing about how his style is more clean-cut  and up to date-he is a more fashionable man by referring to "Gangnam" which is similar to London's Oxford Street. We see him dressed in suits and bow ties, making him look smart to fit the modern image he is portraying for the girl he likes. As it is a more playful and comical song, we see an appearance from a Korean comedian half way throughout-and the dance choreography itself is rather unique. In many KPOP songs choreography is vital to creating a successful video, which made Gangnam Style famous in Korea for a little while.

The music video for this song has caused the huge success it reached, making it completely substantial. This has been proven through its international success, as it has become a hit worldwide despite being sung in Korean. There are many wide shots and mid shots, as well as some close up shots which allow us to see PSY's facial expressions. We get to see the choreography well due to some crane shots and due to the structure of the shots overall, and additionally the camera zooms in and out to strengthen the lively atmosphere fabricated. Not only in Gangnam style but the case with many KPOP videos is that the lighting tends to be extremely artificial, creating a more perfected and chiselled look on the singers. This is the youthful perception of beauty which Koreans admire, and we see another star called "Hyuna" who represents this in Gangnam Style. Without good lighting, Kpop videos will not do well as the presentation of their idols is essential to creating the right image for fans.

How to set up a 'Browser Bin'.

Creating and Naming Bins

The first step in organizing your project is to create new bins to store your source clips, audio, and sequences. Generally, you organize a project by grouping similar elements together into specific bins. You will create three bins—one each for music, clips, and sequences.
In Final Cut Express, there are often several ways to perform the same task or access the same function. For example, you can create a bin in three different ways. You can choose a menu option, use a keyboard shortcut, or Ctrl-click to select an option from a shortcut menu. You will create a bin using each approach. For this exercise, make sure your Browser is set to View as List rather than as icons, although you can also create and name bins in other views as well.
  1. Click in the Browser window to make it active.
  2. Choose File > New > Bin.
    70fig01.jpg

A new bin appears in the Browser with a default bin name and number.
    fig_3_27.jpg

  3. Since the bin name is already highlighted within the text box, just type the wordMusic.
  4. Press Return or Tab to accept the name. If you need to correct it, click in the text area of the name itself, not the bin icon, to select the name again.
  5. To create the second new bin, press Cmd-B.
  6. Type Clips in the name area.
  7. To create the third bin, Ctrl-click on a blank gray area under the Name column in the Browser window and choose New Bin from the shortcut menu.
    p52_s7_cur.jpg

  8. Type Sequences in the bin name area.
  9. To delete Bin 1, the empty bin that was already in the project, click it once to select it and press Delete

Scratch Disk

First i opened Final Cut Pro.

Then i clicked on 'Final Cut Pro' at the top and then clicked on 'System Setting'.

When system setting opened i then clicked on 'SET'.

then i had to choose the folder where i want all my work to be saved then click 'Choose'.

Then i repeated the same process for 'Waveform Cache', 'Thumbnail Cache' and 'Autosave vault'.

When i was done i clicked 'OK'.

and thats done.

Task 5

I will structure my idea plans very well and I shall make sure every piece of work that I have not complete is then completed. I shall do at least an hour of work to make sure my work is fully on schedule and also finish to the best of my ability. If I’m having difficulties with my assignment then to seek help with my tutor or any of my other teachers and not to be scared to ask for help if the task is difficult. Also, I will plan my timetable to keep myself on track with all my  work, sleep and timing. If I am unable to attend any of my lesson I will contact my tutor to tell that I will not be attending and I will also take the time to talk to my study buddy for any other work I have to do or have missed out on in order for me to catch up and be up to date, or if my study buddy is away then I will help him or her out on their work and give them the necessary information e.g. sheets/documents to help them in our work. I will take it upon myself to get a diary so I can record things that I need or any targets my tutor or teachers gives me, so I know what I need to focus on and so I can improve on my learning in college. If I am in need of any help or advice then I can go to student support adviser and they can talk to me and give me good advice. I will also review my projects more often so I can find all the little mistakes I’ve made and what me or my partner need to fix. This will enable me to identify my strengths; so I can build upon it and my weakness, so I can find out what I need to improve.

My Video Profile.

Viral Video.

Viral marketing is an idea that spreads and an idea that while it is spreading actually helps market your business or cause. It usually uses the Internet as digital platform, because is the best way to spread it all round the word. It has pros and cons. Is cheap to advertise and It can be a massive success if people like and post or share it on their social media sources, such as: Facebook, Twitter, Ask, Google, YouTube, etc. Otherwise it just going to disappear in a few time.

JK Wedding Entrance Dance.

"JK Wedding Entrance Dance" is a viral video originally uploaded to YouTube on July 19, 2009, featuring a wedding, using "Forever" by Chris Brown as the song for their wedding march. In its first 48 hours, the video was viewed more than 3.5 million times. The original upload of the video was the 3rd most popular video on YouTube in 2009, and as of June 2012 had been viewed over 76 million times.

The video begins with ushers closing the church doors with everything appearing normal, getting ready for the start of a wedding. "Forever" by Chris Brown then begins to play. To the surprise of the audience, the ushers, groomsmen and bridesmaids then progressively dance down the aisle, culminating in the groom.

Usually, using a copyrighted song like "Forever" will get your video booted from YouTube, but instead the site took advantage of the video's popularity by advertising the song to video viewers. The couple who originally uploaded the video are also asking viewers to open their wallets, not for commercial purposes but to contribute to violence prevention programs.

The purpose of the video is to make people laugh but also to advertise the song. The target audience range between 10 to 50. The video is not that technical. It is filmed on one camera which isn't good quality and moves around a lot. But the sound is good quality. There isn't any editing it is all one take. This is to give the impression someone is filming it on their phone which makes the advert seem more real.

Cadbury Gorilla Viral Video.

The advert features a gorilla drumming to the music of Phil Collins. The 90 second clip involves an actor (Garcon Micheal) in a gorilla suit, preparing mentally for engaging with Phil Collins song, In the Air Tonight and points people to a web site, A Glass And A Half Full Productions. The advert is designed purely for viral entertainment value, and to raise awareness of the Cadbury glass and a half logo.

The target audience is young people (8-30) because in the advert there are young people. It's also aimed at middle to working class people as the product is not too expensive to buy and it is in most shops.

The video appears on YouTube, but also on the television.
Created by the award-winning Fallon agency in London, the commercial has stimulated great interest, partly because it does not feature the product until the very end. The purpose of this video is to entertain people but also to advertise their chocolate. Cadbury use the colour purple in the background so when people see purple it can remind them of Cadbury.

They use lots of different camera angles which makes it look quite professional but the quality isn't too great. Also they use special efforts to make the gorilla look so realistic.

User Generated Video.

The purpose of the cinnamon challenge video was probably to just show her fans she was able to do the challenge but not complete it. Also, maybe she wanted to do it because she would of gained more viewers or she has an interest of putting her body at risk just to entertain her fans. Also, maybe she wanted to do it because she would have gained more viewers.

It was mostly targeted to teenagers and people to their mid thirty because they usually are on different social media sites so it will be easy for the video to be promoted.

The video appears on YouTube, but also on the television for example The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and also it was sent around through social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. and mobile phones.

Cinnamon Challenge video, the image quality was very clear you could see the background clear enough and what she was doing. The video was not pixelated. The sound quality was good because even though her voice was quite loud.

Legal and Ethical

Legal and Ethical.

What does ‘copyright’, mean?

Copyright is a legal concept and give the creator or the original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Copyright can be use for example a music, video and ect…

Give three examples of different things which include in your video and could be subject to copyright:

·      Logo.
·      Music.
·      Props.

List two websites that give copyright free music:

·      www.freeplaymusic.com
·      www.foter.com

List a website where you can find free or low fee photographs:

·      www.istockphoto.com

Explain what a location release form and why is it needed for filming?

It is really important that you have correct clearances and permissions in your film or video. If you don’t, then you might not have the right to show it in puplic, much less, sell it to a broadcaster. And also

What is a contributor release form and why is it required?

Contributor release form is needed because it has right to ensure that the guardian of a project’s outputs has the necessary ownership or grants of rights over all contributions to allow them to distribute under the chosen licence. In some cases this will mean that to contributor will assign the copyright in all contributors to the project owner.

The 5 Shot Rules

The Five Shot Rules.

The 5 shot rule is a essential to any video, it is the building blocks most video as it varies from different shots to show the surrounding area to the subject that is being filmed.

The video that you see up is a reviewed by me using the 5 shot rule for shooting video. Below a quick review of what that looks like.

  1. An extreme close-up (detail) of action (movement)
  2. Close-up of the face of the person doing the action
  3. Medium shot, face and action together
  4. Over-the-shoulder view of the action (gives viewer the point of view of the person doing the action)
  5. Another (different) angle

There are many video formats that can be played onto video player. A video format is a file that contains video.

Streaming.
It means that the data being transferred can be used immediately, without having to download the "thing" in it's entirety before it can be used.

File Compression.
It means when it get a larger file in to a smaller zip file.

Aspect Ratios: 4:3, 16:9.
It means the width and the height of the image. For example 4:3 means every 3inch of the height, you will have 4 inch of width.
